For Immediate Release Contact: Monica Miller, Director of Programs NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR 2009 TWINING HUMBER AWARD FOR LIFETIME ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT :: Artist Trust is accepting nominations for the Irving and Yvonne Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement until September 3, 2009. The annual award of $10,000 is given to a Washington State female visual artist, age 60 or over, who has dedicated 25 years of her life to creating art. The award recognizes creative excellence, professional accomplishment and dedication to the visual arts. Mary Lee Hu, Seattle-based metalsmith, was the 2008 Twining Humber Award recipient. Other past recipients were Elizabeth Sandvig, Mary Henry, Fay Jones, Doris Chase, Ramona Solberg, and Patty Warashina. Mary Randlett was the inaugural award recipient in 2001. “This award dedicated to a woman artist, is very meaningful to me as an artist who works in the non-traditional media of clay, and as a woman in pursuit of a career in art. I am quite aware of the difficulties of balancing the responsibilities of raising children, maintaining a household, teaching, and having a professional life. When I received this award, it made me suddenly aware how quickly my life has passed... It has been a thoroughly exciting and rewarding life, in pursuit of an indulgent, visual fulfillment, and coupled with a variety of many interesting people, great friends and family.” [2002 Twining Humber Award recipient Patti Warashina] The Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement is open to all visual artists who meet the eligibility requirements of the program. Nominations will be accepted for artists working in all genres of the visual art discipline. Any U.S. resident may nominate an artist. Artists may NOT nominate themselves. After all nominations have been received, one nominee will be selected by a selection panel comprised of artists and/or arts professionals. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Artist Trust website at www.artisttrust.org/grants/THA, or individuals may request a copy by sending a self-addressed, stamped, business-sized envelope to: Twining Humber Award, Artist Trust, 1835 12th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98122. The Irving and Yvonne Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement is made possible by a generous gift from Yvonne Twining Humber to the Artist Trust Endowment Fund. Yvonne, who passed away in May 2003, was a painter of both urban and rural landscapes, and was employed by the Works Progress Administration from 1935 to 1943. Originally from New York City, Yvonne was raised in England and New England and then lived in Washington State for over 50 years. With the estate she and her husband built together, Yvonne established a means to recognize female artists who have dedicated a lifetime to their artwork. Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization whose sole mission is to support and encourage individual artists working in all disciplines in order to enrich community life throughout Washington State.
