About the Artist

Frances Nelson (Seattle) earned her B.A. in Architectural studies from the University of Washington and a M.Arch. from the Rhode Island School of Design. She believes there is profound beauty in the small, understated and subtle. Whether through architecture or site-specific installations, Frances strives to create work that is tactile, emotive and refined, engaging the body and drawing in the senses in some way. She is interested in how one material connects to the next, and how each part relates to the whole; the resulting expression giving form to the work.

Frances received 2015 GAP funding to continue her work in exploring the relationship between material and pattern, and scale and form, especially in the context of site-specific, outside work. The grant will fund the purchase of a laser cutter and CNC router that she will use for the fabrication and testing of her ideas.
