About the Artist
Karen Dedrickson (Seattle) cannot stand still when she paints! Her brush is filled with her emotions—she strikes, pushes or drags it across the smooth paper surface. Black ink is Karen’s favorite media. Being an observer and partner with water, ink and paper is a delicate balance—it is the heart of Sumi/Calligraphic Painting. She calls herself a Contemporary Sumi Artist for she may add charcoal, collage and acrylic paint for textural contrasts.
Expressing her observations of human nature and interpreting our emotions as textures and movements is Karen’s inspiration. Currently her birds act like a Kanji character. Calligraphic and abstract, they are her personal wings, as she is breaking free of her personal boundaries.
