About the Artist
Susan Derrick’s (Redmond) work explores the human form by means of gestural painting. The isolation of the figure dissolves into richly textured layers of atmospheric color. Thick impasto and gestural brushstrokes are created and destroyed by scratching and scraping to emphasize ambiguity. The transience of time and the fragility of being human are underlying themes in her work. Her paintings speak quietly evoking the spirituality of the individual. Susan began her professional art career after earning a BFA in Painting from Alfred University, NY. After a rewarding 10-year career as a commercial illustrator in New York, Susan moved to Washington. She has received numerous regional and national awards for her paintings.
