About the Artist
Shortly after completing her Master of Fine Arts, University of Washington, Susie Lee (Seattle) was recognized by the Seattle Weekly as the “2006 Emerging Artist of the Year” for the “intelligence, emotion and sensuality” of her video art. Following her first solo exhibition at Lawrimore Project in 2007, Susie was named “An Artist to Watch” by the national publication Artnews. Susie’s work has been exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, Denver, and Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, and internationally in Italy (Galleria Tiziana Di Caro, Salerno; and Artefiere, Bologna), and at the Gallery Hyundai, Seoul, Korea. In 2008 she was awarded a Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs' CityArtist Project, and she was the winner of the 2010 Stranger Visual Art Genius Award for her work in sculpture, video, and performance. In 2011, the Portland Art Museum selected her as one of the recipients of the Northwest Contemporary Art Award. In 2012 she had her first solo museum exhibition at the Frye Art Museum, Of Breath and Rain. Her work was recently featured in an episode of Seattle Channel’s Art Zone. She will be co-curating Soft Power, Activated with Kolya Rice at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, and is the visual designer with music director Stephen Stubbs and staging director James Darrah in Venus and Adonis at Cornish. She is represented by Galleria Tiziana Di Caro and Myers Contemporary.
Susie received a 2012 GAP to help with the costs of production and documentation of Susie’s collaboration with Catherine Cabeen and her dancers in a piece inspired by the works of Niki de Saint Phalle. Susie will be the visual artist on the project Susie will work with Catherine (lead dancer and choreographer) and her company to create visual works in the transitional spaces of On the Boards that reflect the physicality, symbolism, and aesthetics of Niki de Saint Phalle. The performance will take place in January 2013.
Susie received a 2007 GAP to purchase multi-media materials and gain experience with lighting, optics and mechatronics for her September 2007 show of new work at the Lawrimore Project. She will use video projection and a system of LEDs to “create discreet works that examine the slippage and differentiation between perceived and metronomic time.” One focus of her exhibition will be “the metaphorical implications of ‘on’ and ‘off’ in the language of light and shadow.” Her most recent work has been similarly concerned with integrating time-based mediums with static environments to express transitions between holding on and letting go.
