It’s a question that’s never really a question: ‘You’re not from around here, are you?’
Collage and altered book artist Lisa Myers Bulmash confronts that coded inquiry through visual artworks that explore how race is often tied to place. The work includes collage on paper and birch panels, altered books, and assemblage sculptures.
Additional wall text and video includes interview quotes on issues of:
- Place as a marker of black identity (“where black people live,” what is considered an appropriately “black” space)
- Racial authenticity in children and families: black bodies outside “black” spaces
- Vulnerability and hyper-visibility of black bodies
Visitors to the exhibit will be encouraged to express their experiences of racial identity as Northwest residents, by written comments and at artist-led events. In the project’s final weeks, these contributions will influence new works to be added to the exhibit.
The exhibit opens on November 4, 2017 and continues until April 8, 2018.
