Overview

Purpose:
The chair provides administrative, academic and artistic leadership to the Art Department, providing detailed oversight of the day-to-day operation of the department, as well as visionary leadership for Fine Arts at Cornish in close collaboration with the Design Department. The Chair works collectively with the other six department chairs, the Director of Library Services and all other academic administrative offices in support of the academic mission of Cornish College of the Arts and the success of its students.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: MFA or equivalent degree
- Experience: Possesses a professional record of studio art practice and exhibition as well as an artist and track record of success as an academic administrator. Has demonstrated organizational leadership/management experience leading disciplines related to the department as a Unit Director or Chair with human resources and budget responsibility. Has a well-informed appreciation and understanding of technology and its impact on art.
Student-Focus on Learning: Has created a culture where excellence in teaching is valued and rewarded. Understands the importance of promoting the best student experience. Possesses superior teaching skills.
Administrative Skills: Possesses strong organizational, administrative and financial skills having dealt with a range of staffing and resourcing issues. Understands a union and professional association context. Has worked with the internal processes in a post-secondary institution and contributes to making them more effective and efficient. Can balance contributing to an institution-wide administrative perspective and direction while acting as a strong advocate for the department.
- Leadership: Able to provide leadership within a collegial structure. Leads with openness, transparency and enthusiasm while also able to make difficult decisions and move the department forward. Is fair, consistent, strategic and inspirational. Demonstrates inclusiveness, strength of character, integrity, and ethics.
Strategic Vision: Possesses a demonstrated ability to develop and garner support for an inspiring, shared vision that honors the successes of the past and provides linkages across multiple disciplines and communities. Can effectively communicate the vision of the department to the greater institution and broader community.
Interpersonal Skills: Builds and maintains positive, productive relationships with peers, colleagues, staff, students and faculty. Is open, inclusive, respectful, collegial and collaborative. Creates a strong team environment both within the department and across the rest of the institution. Flexible, sensible and possessing an active sense of humor.
- External Relationships: Has productive relationships with a diverse range of communities including artists, industry, government and associations. Understands fundraising including how to develop public and corporate partnerships/sponsorships, and how to access community and endowment funds. Has been involved in recruiting and alumni affairs.
