Overview

CALL FOR ARTISTS: ENTRYWAY ARTWORK
Beautiful Downtown Lewiston under the authority of the Lewiston Urban Renewal Agency is pleased to announce its call for artists for the Downtown Lewiston Streetscape Project as part of the redevelopment of 1St and 5th Streets in Lewiston, Idaho.

Lewiston’s location at the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake Rivers is significant because the Nez Perce Trail, Lewis-Clark Trail, Northwest Passage Scenic Byway and All-American Road all begin, end or pause at this juncture.  This call is for entryway artwork located in the 5th Street corridor.  5th Street is the linking corridor from the Highway 95 bypass into the heart of the historical downtown business district which was and still is the center for business, culture and community.  The work is to include art on both sides of the pedestrian overpass at the intersection of 5th Street and the Bypass and the artist will be required to have a structural engineering certification to meet Idaho Transportation Department standards.  This requires an Idaho licensed structural engineer.  This art must be attached to existing overpass infrastructure and no additional footings will be allowed. A second complementary piece is to be located 6 blocks south on the southeast corner of 5th and F Streets.  Electrical power can be provided at either location should the artist choose to incorporate complementary lighting that would need to be coordinated.  The artist will be responsible for installation at both locations. Budget for this call is $90,000.

The artwork should be a welcoming enhancement to the visual appearance of the corridor and should appeal to a broad range of people and be uplifting and stimulating to the spirit, intellect and physical senses. The minimum size of individual components of this project must be 36” tall or larger and be designed and fabricated for long-term outdoor durability and ease of maintenance, including potential vandalism.  Artistic creativity and interpretation that speaks to Lewiston’s heritage and natural setting is encouraged.  TD&H Engineering in Lewiston is overseeing the construction project for the infrastructure, streets, sidewalks and landscaping.  The selected artist is encouraged to coordinate with this firm for installation and any desired electrical needs.

This opportunity is open to all artists, designers and/or artist teams from various disciplines regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, or physical or mental disabilities.  Applications shall include the following information submitted as a single PDF file including Section 1-4 (no PowerPoint, or individual jpg images, except as noted below) on a CD only:

- Section 1: No more than ten (10) images in a jpg or Power Point format showing examples of past work.  Each image must be labeled with the artist’s name, title of work, medium, size, site, and date of completion.
- Section 2: A resume not to exceed two (2) pages, including references for previous projects completed
- Section 3: A maximum two (2) page statement of approach for the project which should include: what the artist proposes to do; why the artist or team is interested in this project; the artist’s or team’s ability to carry out this project; and how the artist’s work relates to this project.  An expected financial proposal must be included.
- Section 4: A maximum of three (3) 8½”x11” sketches for each of the proposed sites. Sketches must be included in the PDF file. In addition each sketch must be submitted as a separate jpg file at no less than 800 px X 600 px.
