Overview
The Evergreen State College seeks a broadly trained, versatile faculty-colleague to teach photographic arts in a wide range of interdisciplinary courses at the undergraduate level. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, expertise in analog and digital photography, a broad understanding of histories of photography, visual studies and art theory and criticism. Candidates should be working artists with demonstrated scholarly and creative activity who believe in the inseparable connection of the creative arts and the liberal arts. Because all visual arts faculty at Evergreen primarily teach in interdisciplinary art programs, this position requires the abilities to write and speak about one’s work and the work of others and the ability to offer critical support to students pursuing work in a range of 2D and 3D media. Successful candidates will demonstrate commitment to supporting skills in a range of literacies, including close or critical reading skills and writing as thinking. Faculty must be capable of presenting intellectual and artistic strategies that meet the needs of students whose learning goals and artistic experience is diverse. Because Evergreen organizes its curriculum through interdisciplinary coordinated studies (rather than through departments and courses), the ideal candidate will encourage experimentation and foster the exchange of ideas across disciplines through creative work, teaching and research.
At Evergreen, faculty on teaching teams work closely with students and enjoy a high degree of freedom to determine the subject matter, pace, emphasis, classroom strategies and modes of evaluation. Candidates with experience teaching with faculty from disciplines outside the humanities are particularly encouraged to apply. We also encourage applicants who have had experience teaching and/or working with students from underrepresented populations.
In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to advise and mentor students and participate in Evergreen’s system of shared governance. Through their participation in shared governance, faculty play a significant role in most aspects of how the college is run.
