La MaMa Umbria International is a nonprofit cultural center and artists’ residence founded by Ellen Stewart in 1990. Dedicated to the creation of activities which foster cultural exchange and international understanding, the center provides the opportunity for culturally diverse artists to live together while working on productions or participating in workshops and to develop their artistic skills immersed in a creative, natural environment. In the past eleven years, the Center’s activities have included the presentation of over thirty theatre productions as well as workshops, art exhibitions, and conferences.
The Center is situated in the countryside surrounding the town of Spoleto in central Italy, less than two hours away from Rome. It is a 700 year-old convent that has been transformed into a work center and residence for artists. Situated in the countryside surrounding Spoleto, the work is immersed in a natural environment.
Workshops are held here with internationally renowned art professionals, whose work is contributing to the shaping of the contemporary landscape of performative arts. Actors, directors, dancers, performers and choreographers will have the opportunity to meet and work with inspiring masters.
