Overview
The Visiting Indigenous Professional (VIP) Program provides hands-on training in various disciplines to further the experience of individuals currently working in Native museums and cultural centers.
The VIP Program also provides technical advice in the planning and development of a museum or cultural center. Areas of interest include collections management, conservation, registration, library services, membership and visitor services, and exhibition development. Before applying to the VIP Program, candidates should become familiar with the National Museum of the American Indian’s (NMAI’s) various programs and departments by reviewing a copy of the museum’s Programs and Services Guide or by reviewing the website. Candidates are encouraged to contact NMAI staff to explore study options and topic ideas in order to prepare a strong proposal.
Application Process and Deadlines:
The VIP Program is competitive, so candidates should provide a rationale for their visit, including a thorough study plan (detailing the kinds of activities and meetings in which they hope to engage) and a personal statement explaining how they will apply their research to work in their home communities.
The program has two application deadlines each year: March 15 and September 15.
If a candidate is not selected, or if an application arrives too late to be considered, a new application is necessary for future consideration. It is important to note that the VIP Program is not designed specifically for personal enrichment; instead, the training is focused upon serving the needs of Indigenous communities and their cultural institutions.
