Overview

The City of Edmonds Arts Commission offers an opportunity for Northwest regional artists to create temporary outdoor art installations on three City owned fence sites: south of ArtWorks at 201 Second Ave S, east of the Frances Anderson Center at 700 Main St, and the Civic Field fence on 6th opposite the Public Safety Complex.

BACKGROUND: In 2010, The Arts Commission, interested in encouraging visual conversation through temporary artworks on three chain link fences, installed the first project as part of a program facilitated by Seattle artist Marita Dingus.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Subjects may include, but are not restricted to, community, nature, and history. Content must be deemed family friendly and appropriate for public display in a community space with diverse audiences. The artist is responsible for creating the work and attaching it by approved methods to the fence for a period of up to 4 months. Materials must be appropriate for the weather conditions and must not degrade or pollute during the exhibit period. The City will prepare signage for the fence to identify the artist(s) and provide information about the work. The usable portion of the fence measures 5’ x 20 - 80’ depending on the site.

BUDGET: The City of Edmonds Arts Commission contract with the artist provides a stipend of $500.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
- Proposal: Artists should submit a proposal (one page or less) which describes the thematic nature of the work, what the artist thinks the artwork will add to the community, what conversations it might evoke, and proposed dates for installation.
- Materials: Information on proposed materials (including weight); maintenance, safety, and environmental concerns; and a description of the way the work will be attached to the fence.
- Visuals: A rendering or sketch of the proposed work must be submitted on a CD or electronically.
- Resume: Cover letter and resume which demonstrate professional history and skills. Please include up to five images of recent work.

All proposals will be reviewed by the Edmonds Arts Commission. Selection is based on artist qualifications and appropriateness of the proposal for the site.
