I did my Meet the Artist event around the cities of Tieton, Cowiche and Yakima in Yakima County. Sylvia Imbrock from Mighty Tieton was our hostess for the day, which started in the morning with a visit to “Ready by Five,” a preschool for children under 5. I did a music workshop and composed a song along with the kids, using their words as lyrics.
We continued on to Cowiche, where I met with four different classes at Marcus Whitman Elementary from kindergarten to 3rd grade. Next I went to Garfield Elementary, where I worked with the young participants of the YAMA String Orchestra. In all of these events I created new music on the spot with the students and talked about the music creation process, demonstrating rhythm, melody and harmony and engaging the children in energetic music playing together.
The day concluded with a solo keyboard performance at Gilbert Cellars in Yakima, which was covered by the The Yakima Herald and very well-attended.

Artist Trust’s Meet the Artist program is an integral component of the annual Artist Trust Fellowships. Every Fellowship recipient presents an event outside of their geographic area of residence or to a community that would not ordinarily have access to their work. Meet the Artist bridges our artistic community with the diverse communities in Washington State, increasing awareness about the vital roles the arts and artists play in our culture.
