On April 23, Port Townsend writer Judith Kitchen’s Meet the Artist event, Picture Your Life: A Workshop on Writing to Photographs, afforded spectacular results. Twenty people gathered at The Pink House Library Learning Center and shared perspectives, experiences, and memories related to old family pictures they’d brought from home—the old-fashioned kind, the kind you can hold in your hand. This spirited conversation was the beginning of a vigorous two-and-a half hour workout, a visceral exercise which continued with writing 1,000 words sparked by the photos. Each participant wrote (sweated through?) two pieces, and the group discussed various larger projects that might come out of the exercise, as well as techniques for revision.
Kitchen followed-up in a radio interview on KPTZ, the volunteer radio for Port Townsend, fielding questions about the workshop, and discussing Artist Trust’s mission to support Washington State artists of all disciplines. There is already talk of additional workshops in the fall!

Artist Trust’s Meet the Artist program is an integral component of the annual Artist Trust Fellowships. Every Fellowship recipient presents an event outside of their geographic area of residence or to a community that would not ordinarily have access to their work. Meet the Artist bridges our artistic community with the diverse communities in Washington State, increasing awareness about the vital roles the arts and artists play in our culture.
