Jan 31 2009 - 8:00pm Jan 31 2009 - 10:00pm The greatest words. The greatest music. Opera tells some of the most powerful stories, so it's no wonder that Shakespeare's works fit so well within the form. For this year's Young Artist Showcase, we will feature some of the best combinations of the Bard's words with the music of opera's greatest composers. And with Shakespeare as a master of both light-hearted comedy and heartbreaking tragedy, this is your chance to hear darkness and light in one single night. What is it about Shakespeare's works that so appeals to opera composers? Is it their genius, their theatricality, or simply the fact that his plays are always popular? Whatever the reason, the works of Shakespeare have been adapted for more than 270 unique operas, starting with a version of A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1692. We're hoping you'll find Tacoma Opera's Young Artist Showcase just as appealing. Our performers are recent university graduates, who are sure to bring the energy and enthusaism the Bard's work deserves. The music will come from some of opera's finest composers. The words? All Shakespeare. We think you'll find it's the perfect way to spend a midwinter night.
