Personal Statement

In the early 1980’s I observed a phenomenon in a photograph of a mirrored hillside visible in the still waters of Washington state’s Lake Chelan. When rotated 90° this photograph came to life before my eyes and, instead of a hillside on the water’s edge, I saw an infinite array of never before seen embedded images on the shoreline of the lake. I became transfixed by the experience of momentarily being propelled into a new dimension and was so dramatically impacted by this awareness it proved to be a defining moment in my art as well as in my perception of nature. Soon after, I embarked on a quest to develop a photographic technique that I believed had the potential of changing our understanding of physical dimension, nature and contemporary abstract art.

To further explore the initial phenomenon I encountered and believing that photographic images in a mirrored relationship would produce infinite artistic expressions, I began experimenting with primitive methods of creating my abstract pieces..  As I studied what I believed to be a juxtaposition between time and physical dimension, a new dimension began to reveal itself in the mirrored images I was creating.  I soon realized entire ecosystems never before seen could become visible in my abstract art.  With this amazing reality as my inspiration, I have taken my photographic techniques into the 21st Century and have now created an extensive body of art using my digital photographs.

The unique aspect of my art, unlike that of traditional contemporary abstract art, is that it represents both the vibrant and dynamic qualities seen in photographic images as well as a viable way of drawing back the veil of the natural world to reveal the fascinating realities awaiting our discovery. I have come to understand that the driving forces of creating my abstract art are 1) developing this sensitivity in observing natural images and shapes inherent in what I am working with, 2) pursuing a passionate interest in pioneering this innovative photographic process and 3) bringing these dynamics together in beautiful ways as I exploring my personal artistic expression.
