Biography
I began as a performance artist, studying dance as a child. I also experimented with many crafts; including; sewing, knitting, hand quilting, ceramics, stained glass and jewelry making. My love of dance persisted. I attended California State University at Hayward with a major in dance and a minor in theater. Immediately after, I began my career as a secondary teacher. Because full time dance jobs are difficult to come by, I found myself teaching a variety of subjects (at times including dance and/or theater), spanning the gamut of the high school curriculum.
Over the years I have continued to study art in numerous forms. Nearly twenty years ago I began to paint in watercolors and fell in love with the medium. I am fascinated with light and color and the drama you can create with both. My first love will always be watercolor but I enjoy a variety of media as well as subject matter.
Fourteen years ago I took a leave from teaching and spent eight months studying fresco painting/restoration, oil painting/restoration and serigraphy in Florence, Italy with the intention of returning to the U.S. to teach art/painting. A year after I returned from Italy I got a job at a private International school just outside of Antwerp, in Belgium, where I taught theater, painting and dance for a year. When I returned from Belgium I finally got that art job I had hoped for. I spent the next 12 years teaching art and painting for Santa Cruz City Schools on the California coast. What a challenge and a blessing! I do believe that the kids that I worked with are absolutely responsible for keeping me young at heart.
About 5 years ago I began painting on walls in acrylics and thinking about other possibilities with my art. In June of 2006 I made a decision to pursue my own art full time, well… almost full time. I also began periodically teaching small groups of adults.
After much contemplation, in July of 2007, I packed up my house and moved north to try out the lovely Victorian town of Port Townsend, in Washington. I have since become part of a Co-operative Art Gallery called Gallery 9 and have also resumed teaching adults one day a week at Port Townsend’s new art store, Akamai.
