ResidenceSeattle, Wa, USA Place of BirthSt. Paul, Mi, USA Personal StatementI specialize in black and white photography. I strive to create compelling images using natural light and a bit of serendipity. I am fascinated by photographing people. For my candid work I do not interact with my subjects. I attempt to capture spontaneous gestures, fleeting interpersonal interactions and the ephemeral juxtaposition of people and elements in their surroundings. I favor complex images that draw the viewer in with a strong visual component and contain an invitation to linger and discover other elements within the photograph. For my portraiture work I collaborate with my subjects to create images that provide a deeper insight into their character. These photos tend to be less complex but generally still incorporate a significant environmental component. Images that are mysterious, humorous, bizarre or poignant intrigue me. I work carefully to prepare high quality prints with rich tonality and luminosity by using special archival pigments on premium fiber paper. In my alter ego, I am a Professor of organic chemistry, so it is only fitting that I craft my prints using carbon and cellulose.
