Personal Statement

Much of my inspiration comes from architecture.  The practicalities that govern how a building is both constructed and deconstructed fascinate me.  Each layer in the building process is like a skin, and I echo these procedures as I build my sculptures.  I am also influenced by the work of other artists, including M.C. Escher and the Italian printmaker Piranesi.  Both of these  2D artists used the staircase in  images of topsy-turvy worlds and fantastic, nightmarish realms. Some of my sculptures reference the current political climate while also
investigating the staircase's  potential. The possibilities for further exploration are limitless.
I try to reduce my personal footprint on the planet by using as much  salvaged material as possible. The materials that I collect come from construction sites,  illegal dump sites,  commercial buildings,  recycling businesses, and other artists' scrap.  The shapes that I build are sometimes dictated by the materials,  but  may also be formed into a pre-existing idea. Generally, I give the sculptures a monochromatic finish in order to emphasize the texture of the original materials, and to let the viewer observe the way that light travels over three-dimensional forms without the distraction of color.
