About the Artist
Coby Hoffman (Bellingham) is a fiction writer, educator, and mother of two young children. She is the author of Desert Stories, a short story collection. Her second collection, Everyone Dies In This One Too, has been published in literary journals, such as Chicago Quarterly Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Cimarron Review, New Delta Review, The Macguffin, and others. Educated in geography and english, her stories often explore the concept of blank space and Nowhere, and the human behavior these places invite. Most of her stories take place in Nevada's high desert where her extended family lives and where she spent most childhood vacations.
Information included above was provided by artist at the time of application.
Coby received 2016 GAP funding for her first novel, Cakewalk In the Sky, which tells the story of a ghost town located just inside the Nevada Test Site. This funding will allow Coby to reduce her teaching load, maintain high-quality pre-school for her children, and focus on transitioning from published short story writer to novelist.
From the Artist
This award will have a real impact for me over the next few months. It may seem like a small amount for some, but it has enabled me to reduce my teaching load by one class over winter quarter. As a writer, I am always faced with the need for time. This award enables me to have that time, while also providing the best possible care for my children. Thank you!
Special thank you to the members of Artist Trust who traveled all the way up to Bellingham for open houses and information sessions.
