About the Artist
Gala Bent (Seattle) received 2011 GAP Award funding to begin a series of drawings that continue an investigating of architecture, utopian ideals, and the human tendency to anthropomorphize everything from animals to mountains. In an effort to enrich and diversify her approach, especially in an implied spatial sense, she has been studying paintings by old masters like Andrea Mantegna, whose architectural and geological spaces are elegantly orchestrated.
Gala received 2008 GAP Award funding for materials to execute a new body of work. Gala was selected for a solo show at 4Culture in Seattle. Like other recent works, the series was graphite and gouache on watercolor paper. She draws inspiration from environmentalist-poet Wendell Berry’s visual mediation of natural forms.
