Terrain, Spokane, is a nonprofit whose mission is to support local emerging artists and culture creators by creating community through our annual events and ongoing programming.  We believe that art, as a part of a robust culture, helps us more fully understand our world and what it means to be human.

Terrain seeks a Director to take on many of the responsibilities traditionally assigned to an Executive Director, but within a non-hierarchical organizational structure where decisions are made collaboratively among other director-level staff and in close consultation with the board.  Our ideal candidate is passionate about the role of art in making Spokane an extraordinary city to live, work and create.

Job Description
Terrain seeks a Director to take on many of the responsibilities traditionally assigned to an Executive Director, but within a non-hierarchical organizational structure where decisions are made collaboratively among other director-level staff and in close consultation with the board.  Our ideal candidate is passionate about the role of art in making Spokane an extraordinary city to live, work and create.  They are also a collaborative, strategic leader who will develop and steward Terrain’s organizational structure, business operations, human resources, fundraising, and financial management. This position reports to Terrain’s Board of Directors, and works collaboratively as peers with Terrain’s Program Director and Operations Director to fulfill Terrain’s mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Governance and Business Operations:  Our Executive Director will be an effective Board liaison, provide sound business management, and collaboratively develop strategic vision to support Terrain’s mission delivery.

The Executive Director will:
- Develop, maintain, engage and support a strong Board of Directors; serve on all board committees
- Work with the Board, Program and Operations Directors to create clear, long-term strategies for mission delivery, and annual plans for operations and program delivery
- Ensure financial stability by being responsible for budget development, oversight, and reporting
- Develop and support effective HR policies and procedures
- Work with the Program and Operations Directors to ensure quality administration, communications, and operational systems to facilitate a productive work environment and sound business operations
- Work with the Board, Program and Operations Directors to create an organizational structure that is collaborative and decentralized, matching Terrain’s values of “We all Build This”

Fundraising and Stewardship: Terrain raises funds to support our mission.  The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors, Program, and Operations Directors to develop a strong fundraising program, and expand Terrain’s fundraising capacity.

The Executive Director will:
- Build a positive fundraising culture among the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders
- Develop annual fundraising plans, and oversee planning and execution of all fundraising goals
- Diversify and grow fundraising efforts for Terrain
- Nurture strong, loyal relationships with current Terrain supporters and cultivate potential donors
- Work with the Program and Operations Directors to further develop earned income opportunities through sponsorship, content, programming, and/or workshop fees

Public Relations: Our Executive Director will jointly represent the interests of Terrain and the artists and events it supports by communicating our mission to stakeholders.

The Executive Director will:
- Pursue local and regional partnerships to better achieve our mission
- Communicate Terrain’s mission within and beyond the organization, and serve as a spokesperson for Terrain
- Work in tandem with the Operations and Program Directors on external communications, including marketing and publicity

- Comfort with shared leadership in a decentralized organizational structure
- Required Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in non-profit fundraising
- Experience leading a small organization to success
- Experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders
- Proven executive management and strategic leadership experience
- Experience in developing and operating business infrastructures that match organizational values

This is a full-time, exempt position, with a salary range of $46,000-$50,000.
