In 2006, Artist Trust bestowed me with a most precious gift—the time and place to focus on my work. Not just any place and not just a few days… after being selected as an alternate for a Media Arts Fellowship, Artist Trust offered me an Artist Residency—a whole month on the west coast of Ireland, in a fabulous home overlooking Clew Bay, courtesy of former Artist Trust Board Member Paul Goode. I am writing you to share my story and encourage you to support this stellar organization, which has impacted my career and so many other creative folks in our community.
During the retreat-like residency, my time in Ireland was spent walking, shooting footage, thinking, editing, photographing, writing, reading… oh, and long stretches of drinking tea and staring out the window. It was the most artistically soul-feeding experience of my life.
My Artist Trust residency came at a crossroads in my life as an artist. I had just made the switch from experimental documentaries to narrative filmmaking. My first feature, We Go Way Back, premiered in January 2006 and I was trying to figure out what to do next. The contemplative and creatively fruitful time I experienced during the residency enabled me to regroup and plunge into the development phase of my next creative endeavor: My Effortless Brilliance, my second feature film. Less than one year later, I followed up with my Sundance hit, Humpday.
Artist Trust understands the professional and creative challenges that working artists face. They know what individual artists need to foster their careers at different stages—whether it is grant money, résumé review, a grant writing workshop or a much-needed pat on the back. Do you know Artist Trust has a 50-hour professional training for artists covering topics like copyright and contracts? I, along with thousands of other artists, regularly peruse their online resources searching for national/international grants and opportunities. Artist Trust offers possibilities we creative types may not even know we need or ones for which we might be afraid to dream.
I am grateful that Artist Trust was there for me in a critical point in my career. They gave me a most amazing gift for pursuing my vision as a filmmaker. I call on you to support this Northwest gem of an organization. Your gift to Artist Trust can make a difference in fostering the creativity of so many artists and making ours such a culturally vibrant community.
Thank you to Artist Trust and to all you supporters!
