Meet the Artist: Delbert Miller

2013 Fellowship Reciipient

2013 Fellowship recipient Delbert Miller presented his Meet the Artist event last January at The Evergreen State College Longhouse in Olympia. A reception was sponsored by The Evergreen Foundation. Artist Trust board member Pablo Schugurensky introduced Delbert (they are both Evergreen alumni).

Delbert presented to a crowd of 75-100 people, which included Evergreen faculty, staff, students, the Provost, the general public, Delbert’s family and Skokomish community members. He paid tribute to other Native artists in the room and described his vision for continuing his work with Native youth. The theme of the evening has the same theme that inspires Delbert as an artist: to keep the memories and teachings of the Ancestors alive. Delbert invited all audience members to drum using a “drumming plank” that accommodates up to a dozen drummers, and many in the audience had drums as well. Delbert led an honor song for children and invited youth to drum with him on the plank. His talk was accompanied by a slideshow of images of his work.

Artist Trust’s Meet the Artist program is an integral component of the annual Artist Trust Fellowships. Every Fellowship recipient presents an event outside of their geographic area of residence or to a community that would not ordinarily have access to their work. Meet the Artist bridges our artistic community with the diverse communities in Washington State, increasing awareness about the vital roles the arts and artists play in our culture.
