Synopsis: “It is a fact that people of color, and more specifically Black people, are the most underrepresented group in the art world. We find ourselves questioning our importance and our voices to be understood outside of the white gaze and white space. I find this to be not only a reflection of privilege but, more specifically, education.

“We, as Black people, are always placed in the position to teach instead of existing. I am humbled to be chosen to juror a show, creating a safe space of understanding and acknowledgment for us. This show is open to any who feel their work gives voice to their personal experiences, whether figurative, non-representational, text-based, image-based, and everything in between.

“I want you to know that even if you do not make it into this show, this is the time to apply to anything you want. The world has momentarily opened its eyes—jump on it. If this show calls to you, take this chance on yourself and apply. (I’m talking to the one Black girl in a sea of white eyes in the back. I see you.)”
