Why Work at Arts Corps?
Founded in 2000, Arts Corps is a multidisciplinary organization in Seattle that provides free arts learning opportunities to K-12 young people throughout South King County. Our programs include school-based programs, after-school classes and teen leadership programs with an emphasis on serving young people from marginalized communities. Through these programs and local and national leadership, Arts Corps addresses a critical opportunity gap in a region where race is the greatest determining factor in access to arts education.
Arts Corps is committed to the personal and professional growth of its employees. We work hard to build a supportive, respectful and celebratory community among our staff, board, volunteers, and teaching artist family. We provide paid monthly professional development workshops for teaching artists and classroom assistants focused on a variety of topics to strengthen and support our teaching cadre’s growth as educators and artists. We look forward to finding the next members of our extended Arts Corps creative family.
Arts Corps’ teaching approach is based on the model of culturally responsive pedagogy. Teaching artists create lesson plans that allow room for flexibility while fostering the practice of artistry, imagination, critical thinking, persistence, risk-taking and reflection. Arts Corps classes typically meet on a quarterly basis–Fall, Winter, and Spring–once or twice weekly for between 8-12 weeks. We work in both in-school and after-school K-12 settings. Occasionally we hold special projects during the summer. Currently we anticipate our work to be a mix of virtual and in-person teaching for the 2021-2022 school year. We place the safety of our faculty as the highest priority when determining in-person teaching assignments
