The School of IAS has an outstanding opportunity for a Studio Technician (Instructional Technician 2 (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv)) to join their team.

Position Purpose

The studio technician is a part of the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences and supports a variety of courses in designated fields including, interdisciplinary visual arts, media production, painting, photography and drawing. This position supports classes taught in the art and performance classrooms, and in partnership with faculty and campus facilities maintains the classroom inventory and equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop standard operating procedures for lab and studio equipment and processes to be used by faculty, staff, and students.
• Deliver brief and appropriate Health and Safety talks to designated studio classes during the first week of each academic quarter.
• Outside of regular working hours, respond to emergencies and equipment malfunctions that pose a danger to lab and/or building occupants.
• Partner with UW Environmental Health & Safety staff for resources to meet strategic goals and objectives related to safety culture, compliance, and training.
• Act as safety officer in areas of responsibility, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations to provide a safe workplace environment; train and assist faculty and students on safe use of equipment and materials, and provide support for in-class technical demonstrations.
• Manage and maintain operations and conditions of all designated art studios (UW2-021, DISC 363, HH 1310, and any additional art spaces and studios under the purview of the School of IAS); schedule services and coordinate facilities work orders as necessary.
• Maintain equipment in designated studios and co-ordinate repair as necessary in consultation with faculty, UWB facilities, and EH&S.
• Act as department approver for requests to use studio spaces, and support IAS faculty in reserving spaces for activities outside of regular classroom schedule using the 25Live system.
• In partnership with IAS faculty, prepare equipment and materials for use in studios.This will specifically include studio lighting, sound system, flats, spray booth, and other performance and art equipment.
• In partnership with faculty, assist with the management and maintenance of printing equipment for production of student art in the School of IAS.
• In consultation with faculty, estimate quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed for designated studio classes; evaluate equipment specifications; order equipment and supplies in partnership with IAS Operations Team, Facilities Services and Information Technology as needed.
• Support Course Fees budget processes for designated studio classes.
• Oversee and approve disposition or surplus of equipment and materials and coordinate the safe accumulation and collection of hazardous waste.
• May work directly with student workers supporting studio spaces.
• May assist with maintaining the public art displays on campus.
• Participate in meetings and planning sessions.

Minimum Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in specific instructional area OR two years of college course work in major study area AND two years’ experience in the specific area of operation OR equivalent education/experience.

• Ability to research and implement new or innovative technical methods and ideas when necessary.

Desired Qualifications

• Understanding of health and safety concerns specific to studio art.
• Experience with studio lighting, sound boards, and other performance equipment.

Conditions of Employment

• This is a 50% classified staff position with a schedule to be arranged.
• Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods of time.
