Carnation is seeking new member artists for Cycle 6 (beginning in July 2026 and ending December 2027) to join our artist-run gallery space in the Kenton neighborhood in North Portland, OR. Carnation Contemporary is dedicated to championing critical and contemporary artwork while supporting emerging and mid-career artists from the Pacific Northwest. Artists working in all media, including video and sound, are welcome to apply.

About Carnation Contemporary
Founded in 2018, Carnation has been awarded numerous grants to support our member-centered approach–including Precipice Fund, Ford Family Foundation, and Regional Arts & Culture Council–and has been featured in publications ranging from local press to Hyperallergic and Art in America.

We offer two types of membership: “full members” activate the entire gallery space for month-long exhibition, and “split-members” share the gallery space for one month with one other split-membership artist. In addition to member shows, Carnation hosts special exhibitions such as group shows, exchanges with other galleries, and free open calls. Members support each other in creating robust opportunities in the form of: gallery talks, panel discussions, publications, parties, fundraisers, member hangouts, studio visits, and more.

We wish to foster a diverse community of member artists, including but not limited to diversity in race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability and age. We welcome applications from BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+ community members, rural artists, people with disabilities, early-career and more established artists, and others who are underrepresented within the arts. Though our gallery has a physical space in Portland, we welcome candidates from farther afield so long as they are able to stay involved with the gallery remotely. Members who do not live in Portland should be prepared to make occasional trips to the city to get the most out of their membership. We usually have 18 – 20 members.

Carnation is supported through a combination of member dues and grants. This cycle, Carnation was awarded funding to offer a scholarship for an artist facing financial barriers to monthly membership dues.
