February 20, 2019 – National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $27 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $20,000 to Artist Trust to support business practices programs for artists across Washington State. Arts Works is the Arts Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,605 Art Works applicants for this round of grantmaking, and will award 972 in this category.

“The arts enhance our communities and our lives, and we look forward to seeing these projects take place throughout the country, giving Americans opportunities to learn, to create, to heal, and to celebrate,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Artists know well how to create, inspire, provoke, and innovate with their work, but rare are the resources that help artists develop the skills needed to manage their art as a business, and to make a life and a living as an artist,” says Artist Trust CEO Shannon Halberstadt. “By incorporating the voices of those we serve into our programming, especially targeting historically underserved artists in rural communities and communities of color, we are able to better meet artists’ specific and evolving needs to create a more equitable landscape for artist funding and business training access. We thank the National Endowment for the Arts for their support of our statewide business practices programs.”

As one of the few nonprofits in the U.S. to directly support artists, Artist Trust offers unique resources such as unrestricted grants and business practices programs, which address artist career training by providing modular workshops, educational resources, free programs, scholarships, and subsidized tuition to ensure broad participation in professional development activities. Components of the business practices programs will be delivered throughout 2019 with the goal of serving 1,800 Washington State artists. The projected 70 statewide programs will increase artists’ entrepreneurial skills to help them tackle economic challenges and grow their careers, so they can continue creating and presenting work that enriches the cultural landscape of the Pacific Northwest.
