About
Adriana Grant grew up in small-town New Hampshire and has lived in Seattle since 1995. Her poetry has appeared in 3rd bed, LIT, Diagram, Bird Dog, Caketrain Journal, Peaches & Bats, ShampooPoetry, The Hat, Track & Field, and in the books Wanting Is Easier Than Having (Publication Studio), and Poetry on Wheels: An Anthology of King County’s Poetry on Buses Program 1997–2005 (Floating Bridge Press). Rosemary and Keith Waldrop awarded her third prize in 3rd bed’s First Annual Prize for Poetry and Fiction.
Adriana received 2008 GAP Award funding to cover the costs of travel to a self-styled writer’s retreat in Washington State. She has recently begun her next poetry manuscript, which focuses on the changeable nature of our northwest weather, in all its moods. The retreat is located on Orcas Island and within the cloud shadow of the Olympic Mountains and therefore has particular interesting variability in weather conditions as well as spectacular cloud structures to inspire her manuscript.
Adriana received 2005 GAP Award funding to defray the costs of traveling to New Orleans as part of an upcoming series of poems, including lodging expenses and admission to cultural events while visiting. During her two-week trip to New Orleans, Grant will spend time with the patterns and rhythms of local voices, visiting French Quarter architecture, the Contemporary Arts Center and engaging residents, all with the intention of culling distinct snippets of vernacular language to be assembled into her poems. “I am interested in creating a series of prose poems based in a foreign vernacular, where the sense and feel of the language is very different than that of the Northwest.”
