About
Anna Banana Freeze (they/she) is a Filipino immigrant who grew up yearning for connection and community. With a father in the US Navy, ABF’s family was constantly uprooted – their sense of belonging seemed to always hover on the horizon, an unknowable feeling.
As a newly transplanted Pacific Northwest teen in 1997, ABF began delving into hip-hop culture as an aspiring DJ, then breaker (“breakdancer”), and it was then that Washington state (as well as hip-hop) finally started feeling like home. In 1999, ABF became one of only two non-male members of the Seattle-based hip-hop collective, Massive Monkees, performing amidst artists such as Missy Elliot, Mos Def, Common, 50 Cent, and Macklemore.
For over 17 years, ABF has made their living solely as an artist living on Duwamish land (Seattle, WA.) As a dance educator, they share the connection, community and self-expression they practice and learned from breaking and hip-hop.
