About
Annie Schermer is a multidisciplinary artist and arts educator living in Bellingham, WA. Her diverse practice encompasses puppetry, music, writing, and visual art, all of which center stories and myths that explore paths to healing on a personal and cultural level. The mythic landscapes of their art and performance resonate with archetypes that feel both new and ancient, evoking questions about who we are now and how we can shape the story of who we are becoming.
Slowness, sustainability, and community all factor into her creative practice. She has toured puppet shows by bicycle, and prioritizes reclaimed and biodegradable materials in the construction of puppets and sets. She nurtures creativity in her community through teaching workshops and classes, as well as performing and creating opportunities for performance. Invested in building a puppetry community in the Pacific Northwest, Annie founded the Bellingham Puppet Slam in 2021, and with micro-grants from the National Puppet Slam Network has coordinated and hosted seven puppet slams since. They consult, teach and mentor other performance artists and puppeteers as well as perform regularly in local shows.
Annie has performed puppetry theater across the country, earning awards from Shenandoa and Asheville fringe festivals. Her most recent music album Queen of Eyes, with puppetry and music duo West of Roan, ranked in The Guardian’s top ten folk albums of 2024.
