About

Buddy Bunting works primarily in ink and watercolor on paper. His most recent work is based on the California prison system. He recently exhibited at SOIL Art Gallery, PS122 Gallery, Kirkland Arts Center, and 4Culture Gallery, and was recently awarded the 4Culture Special Project Grant and the Artist Trust GAP Award. Buddy attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, the San Francisco Art Institute, and received his MFA from Boston University College of Fine Arts. He currently lives in Seattle and is a member of the Seattle-based artists’ collective SOIL.

Buddy received 2009 GAP Award funding to aid in framing and installation costs for an upcoming solo show at Crawl Space Gallery in Seattle. Tentatively titled high living, the show will be composed of large framed and unframed works on paper. Modifications to existing gallery walls will be necessary to accommodate the works which will measure up to 30’ in width.

Buddy received 2004 GAP Award funding to finance travel, documentation, and materials for a series of paintings documenting the penitentiaries of the high deserts of the Northwest, and also extending into Montana and California. The project, entitled Scablands, is a comment on the modern correctional facility and the western landscape it occupies. “I am interested in the light, space, and topography of these regions and like to spend time observing each prison from different aspects, times of day, and under changing weather conditions, which has proven difficult on a tight budget.”
