About

Christine Deavel has published poetry, essays, and most recently the play Vicinity/Memoryall (Entre Rios Books), co-written with J.W. Marshall (Seattle). Her poetry collection “Woodnote” (Bear Star Press) received the Washington State Book Award.

Poet, playwright, essayist, and teacher J.W. Marshall is also the author of Meaning a Cloud, which received the Field Poetry Prize from Oberlin College Press. Christine and J.W. owned and operated Open Books, Seattle’s poetry-only bookstore, for over 20 years. They have worked collaboratively on the page and in performance for many years.

Christine and J.W. received 2018 GAP Award funding for the inaugural production of their play, Vicinity/Memoryall. The narrative and lyrical work, set in a rapidly changing and violence-stained city, investigates the power and purpose of memorials for individuals and the culture at large.
