About

Claudia Rowe is a Pulitzer-nominated journalist and writer of creative nonfiction whose work has appeared in The New York Times and Mother Jones, among other publications. Her writing is driven by an effort to understand motivation, especially that which appears most extreme. Those questions focus Claudia’s GAP-honored manuscript-in-progress about the meaning of her correspondence with serial murderer Kendall Francois, an excerpt of which was published in the 2012 Jack Straw Writers Anthology. Claudia’s essay about leaving the East Coast appears in the Seal Press anthology, A Matter of Choice: 25 People Who Transformed Their Lives.

Claudia received a 2013 GAP to assist with travel for a writing and research trip to New York for work on her current manuscript-in-process entitled The Spider and the Fly, which centers around her four-year correspondence with killer Kendall Francois. This book examines the ethical bargains nonfiction writers make in pursuit of their stories – in particular, the mutual exploitation between an interviewer and her subject. The author beleives that the story of her correspondence with a killer has broad relevance to questions many are asking about the moral compromises inherent to journalism and who we, as a society, have deemed worth saving.
