About

Hannah Simmons received her Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Mathematics from Bennington College in 2013 where she studied under Dana Reitz, Terry Creach, and Susan Sgorbati. Hannah spent some time with the Forsythe Company (Frankfurt) under the tutelage of William Forsythe, and spent the 2013-2014 season dancing with José Mateo Ballet Theatre (Boston) where she performed in original works and new interpretations of classical ballets under the artistic direction of José Mateo. Her choreographic work centers around the intersection of dance, mathematics, and technology. She was awarded Velocity Dance Center’s 2015 Bridge Project Residency.

Hannah received 2015 GAP funding to help bring about her upcoming project “Toolkit: Quantifying Dance” an intersection of dance and techology that postulates that generating movement material can be equated to developing an algorithm: the choreographer provides a structural impetus and the dancers carry out the instructions to reveal a precise output. Hannah is interested in experimenting with visualizing choreographic structures and exploring what it means to quantify a choreographic system.
