About

James Hartunian is a queer artist based in Seattle, WA. He constructs electronic environments and objects to stimulate and simulate future worlds, future bodies, and future landscapes. These environments build upon contemporary technological, artistic, and architectural trends as well as his interest in the human sensorial apparatus, electronically networked modes of control and automation, and biological collaboration. His work often starts as a thought experiment. He asks a question and through research (scientific, literary, artistic, field), and he figures out a way to follow it to a conclusion. His interdisciplinary approach to artmaking combines fiction writing, modes of technological data collection, digital fabrication tools, electronic circuit board manufacturing, and conventional methods of sculpture making.

In his professional capacity, he has taught multiple courses at Ohio State University and worked at AN.ONYMOUS (in collaboration with Google R+D) on robotic deployable barriers and experimental architectural models. He received a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan (2019), a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Studio from the School of the Arts Institute Chicago (2020), and an MFA from Ohio State University (2023). He has exhibited domestically Columbus and Findlay Ohio, Chicago Illinois, Seattle Washington, and internationally at Ars Electronica in Linzburg, Austria (2020).
