About

Julia Wald is an artist and illustrator. Originally from Buffalo, NY, she is currently based in Seattle, WA. Her subject matter ranges from intricate googly eyed things and tiny monsters drawn on index cards to detailed “flat” cityscapes and large, mixed media collages. She often uses india ink pens in her work, exploring line, pattern, and texture. She just started working as an editorial illustrator and has been published in magazines and newspapers such as The Baffler and Real Change News. Recently, she started creating comics and graphic memoirs about herself, her friends, and her family.

Julia Wald received the 2019 GAP Award funding for The Golem: A Family History, a compilation of comics and illustrations based on stories of her Jewish family in Europe and the United States. This funding will enable her to do more extensive research about her grandparents and their stories of surviving both World War 1 and II and the Jewish experience of immigrating and assimilating to the United States.
