About

Julie Gautier-Downes was born in San Diego and relocated to New York City in 2001, prompting her bi-coastal identity and interest in perceptions of home. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2011 and her Master of fine arts in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2014. Gautier-Downes has had her photographs published in Ain’t Bad Magazine, Bored Panda, Dazed Digital, the Hand Magazine, Ohio Edit, Phosmag, and RISD XYZ. She has exhibited her work in solo and group shows across the United States and in the United Kingdom and currently resides in Spokane, Washington.

Julie received GAP 2016 funding for Dislocated Memories, an installation project that explores her fractured relationship with her childhood home. This project will be constructed in Spokane, Washington. The resulting free-standing space will serve as a surrogate for her childhood bedroom, where she will assemble objects and furniture that resemble those she remembers having in the room she slept in until she was eleven. This project is not about creating an exact replica of the room, but rather a space that resonates with her memories of that home.
