About
Through a variety of visual media, including photo-based works, film/video, sculpture, installation, and new-media, Justin Beckman’s work explores convergent methods of art-making, while questioning the effects that technology, urban expansion, and globalization have on the relationship of urban and rural cultures. Beckman received a BFA from Art Center College of Design and an MFA in Sculpture from Central Washington University. He has exhibited work both locally and nationally including Art Share in Los Angeles, CA; The Museum of Art in Ft. Lauderdale, FL; G.A.S.P. in Boston, MA; Tacoma Art Museum’s 8th Northwest Biennial and most recently at the Sguardi Sonori traveling festival of media and time based art in Italy, and Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey.
Justin received a 2011 GAP to continue his ongoing investigation into the dichotomy between urban and rural cultures and stereotypes, his Mobile Projection Unit (MPU). The MPU re-contextualizes rural activities into urban settings, and urban activities into rural settings. Using a bicycle-pulled trailer, video projector, and a gasoline-powered generator, Justin will create an easily transportable video-projection device that can be parked in a variety of locations and site-specific venues.
