About
Kahyun Uhm is a sound artist born and raised in South Korea and is currently based in Washington State’s greater Seattle area. She creates site-specific sound installations that engages with themes tied to both longstanding historical and contemporary global issues, such as imperialism in Asia, experiences of immigration, and increased political polarization in the 20th century. Drawing from historically complex locations and other contextual sound sources, she layers and mixes recordings to create spaces for the audience to explore their own relationship to history, memory, space, sound, embodiment, and the present political moment. Her work incorporates video, field recordings, modular synthesis, experimental music, and immersive installation practices.
Uhm received her MFA from Washington State University in the Spring of 2026 during which she helped with art-related Native youth programming and sound art events free for the public. She has performed at Washington State University and the Moscow Contemporary, and her work was recently exhibited in New York Public Library’s Studio 40 2026 Showcase Event.
