About
Karin Vance Chickadel was born in Kalamazoo, MI. As part of a military family, she travelled throughout her youth and as an adult has made the Northwest her home. In 1998, she received a BA in Interdisciplinary Arts and a BS in Psychology from the University of Washington. After working in sculpture for years, Karin discovered the niche of artists’ books while earning her MAAT at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She went on to focus her studies in book arts at Columbia College Chicago, where she earned her MFA in Book and Paper Art in 2005. She has exhibited her work in galleries across the United States and has been published in American Craft magazine.
Karin received 2014 GAP funding to rent space, to purchase supplies and for time to focus on her new larger-scale body of work. Until recently, Karin’s artist’s books have been small and fit between covers. GAP funding supports her move to a larger scale to create paper cut images layered by the dozens. New supplies will bring her work “out from behind the covers” to house her pieces in plexi-glass and wood boxes.
