Lisa Kinoshita

Lisa Kinoshita is a Tacoma-based visual artist and independent curator. Her most recent curatorial project, Tacoma Food Forest: Art, Edibles + Sustainable Culture, was the largest-ever outdoor art exhibit in Tacoma, taking place in a 373-acre wilderness and permaculture test garden. Her instincts have led her in many directions from collaboration with prison inmates practicing longstanding forms of Western craft, to building steel sculptures that support living canopies of sedum plants using greenroof technology. Kinoshita’s artwork has been shown at Tacoma Art Museum, Museum of Northwest Art, Seymour Botanical Conservatory, Foss Waterway Seaport Museum, Vetri, and other galleries and art venues.

Lisa received GAP 2016 funding to develop work for an exhibit called, The West at Soil Gallery in Seattle, opening in May 2017. This show explores the American West through the unique lens of two Japanese-American women, herself and Seattle artist, Susan Surface. Their individual work shows how iconic features of Western life (including hunting, bull-riding and incarceration) open up an unexpectedly fresh dialogue about landscape, race and gender.
