About

Known for the hipster film, Group, starring Portlandia‘s Carrie Brownstein, writer and media artist, Marilyn Freeman is also known in retreat centers for her contemplative CinemaDivina films. Her current passions and research include golden-era film director Dorothy Arzner; the relationships between the personal and transpersonal in creative writing and media art; and the video essay as a creative, contemplative, and critical form. Freeman’s work has been published by The Fourth Genre, TriQuarterly, NAIAD Press, Writing in Public, Rolling Stone, Ninth Letter, and Blackbird, and exhibited in galleries and festivals worldwide. She received an Artist Trust Fellowship in Media Arts (1997), a Grants for Artist Project (GAP) (1998), an Evergreen Faculty Foundation Grant. For the development of her screenplay Sophisticated: The Hollywood Story of Dorothy Arzner, a literary work that concerns LGBT life inspired by a historical person, she was awarded the Arch & Bruce Brown Foundation Grant. Sophisticated is slated to begin pre-production in the fall of 2016 with producers Nellie Bellflower (Finding Neverland) and Wendy Haines, and director Francesca Gregorini (The Truth About Emanuel). Freeman has a BFA in Theater from Cornish and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard. She is originally from Spokane and currently resides in Olympia.
