About

Mel Carter is a mixed, Yonsei, Japanese, and Queer non-binary artist, currently based in Seattle after graduating with a BFA from the University of Washington’s Photomedia program. They have worked as a visual artist and photographer for the past 10 years, engaging in a variety of projects with galleries and art exhibitions, pop-up projects, alternative art spaces, residencies, and music festivals. They have exhibited work in galleries such as Veronica, SOIL Gallery, Museum of Museums, and Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, with an upcoming show at 4Culture in 2025. Mel was a recipient of Centrum’s Emerging Artist Residency in 2021 and the Museum of Glass’ Visiting Artist Residency Program in 2024. Their practice is informed by experiences within the Japanese diaspora, queerness, exploration in modern witchcraft, rituals and mythology, in tandem with waste reduction, food sovereignty, and environmental justice in the cultural context of the Pacific Northwest.
