About

Michelle Acuff received 2010 GAP Award funding to publish a catalog of her piece Surrogate, which consists of sculptural works that consider how increasingly tenuous is our connection to the natural world. Materially, this manifests in physical exploration of the highly toxic and ubiquitous substances of industrial mass production. Conceptually, it is an investigation of the archetypal tropes of “nature” rendered in these materials for commercial consumption. Out of these materials it is Michelle’s aim to render a saccharine, surreal, and dystopic spectacle that implicates us the complicated visual pleasures and ethical dilemmas that frame our contemporary relationship to the planet.
