About

Sarah Rae Hogland is a movement artist and mixed race Chicana from the high desert of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She dedicated much of her youth to training in modern dance and classical ballet and supplemented her training at the American Dance Festival, Joffrey Ballet School, and RIOULT DanceNY. She has performed professionally with Lawine Torrèn Dance Theatre in Sölden, Austria and Pat Graney Company in the US and Germany. Currently, she performs with Seattle artists Alice Gosti and Jody Kuehner, and creates her own solo work. Sarah also teaches dance through Spectrum Dance Theater in elementary schools across South Seattle, She independently co-founded a dance program for youth who are incarcerated and works as a youth counselor for refugee Latino youth. Her cultural work and artistic practices deeply inform one another and reveal creative movement as a powerful resource for navigating our inner landscapes and cultivating shared understanding through embodied experience.

Sarah received 2017 GAP Award funding for solo movement research and performance to traverse the cracks where her whiteness mixes with her Latinidad by utilizing the intimate lenses of family and personal history. Her research will include interviews with the women and elders in her family, texts from Chicanx visionaries about the painful products of cultural suppression and assimilation that exist within her people and personal writings that respond to these materials.
