Shelly Williams

Shelly Williams is originally from Central Washington and studied art at Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. After graduating in 2005, she moved to Minneapolis where she worked for a grassroots social service agency and joined the artist cooperative at Highpoint Center for Printmaking. She returned to Spokane several years later, joining the Saranac Artist Cooperative. Shelly loves to playfully interpret and misinterpret her surroundings. Her artistic practice incorporates walking, chronicling community interactions, writing, and photography. Her current project employs an alter-ego as a means of re-examining a familiar environment. Her work has been shown in Minneapolis and throughout Washington State.

Shelly Williams received a 2013 GAP to purchase film and other print materials, involve additional artists in developing and documenting narratives, and cover production costs and promotional materials needed to organize and install an art exhibit in Spokane in early 2014. The exhibit will focus on themes of “business casual’ through the lens of an alter-ego named Cheney Cutler, a semi-retired journalist with a penchant for uncovering obscure stories and documenting them.
