Stacey Levine

Stacey Levine’s books include “The Girl with Brown Fur: Tales and Stories,”  “Frances Johnson, Dra—,”  and “My Horse and Other Stories.” A Pushcart Prize nominee, recipient of a PEN/West (now PEN/Center USA) Fiction Award, and a Stranger Genius Award for Literature, her short fiction has appeared in Fence, Tin House, The Fairy Tale Review, The Iowa Review, Yeti, The Fanzine, and other venues. She has contributed to the American Book Review, Bookforum, and The Seattle Times; two of her one-act plays were performed in Seattle. Translations of her fiction have appeared in Danish and Japanese publications.

Stacey received a 2014 GAP for travel to Miami, FL for research for a novel, as well as for a transcriptionist. Her novel-in-progress is titled “MICE 1961.” The novel begins in Miami and ends in Seattle: two poles separated by enormous distance, the seats of a levering seesaw. The plot follows two sisters in their twenties (one of them disabled/albino) through their sexual maturation and power struggle as each seeks her own identity in 1961 prior to the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Stacey received a 2005 GAP to help offset the costs of time necessary to finish her short story collection “Pat Smash and Other Stories.” A small portion of the funds will also go towards promotion and marketing. “The stories offer characters and circumstances in the literary tradition of the fantastic—that is to make the point that our life often feels strange or unreal due to life’s awe-inducing complexity.” Levine has published two previous novels, “Frances Johnson and Dra-.”
