About
Sue Roberts has been a professional studio artist working in ceramic and metal sculpture for over 20 years. After completing a BFA in ceramic sculpture at the University of Kansas, she went on to study life modeling at the Art Students League in New York City, and bronze casting/metalwork in Central Florida. She’s taught sculpture and ceramics in various workshops around the country, including at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Having worked in a variety of materials, including wax, wood, copper and aluminum sheet metal, Sue returned to sculpting in clay, which she then fires, paints and seals with an encaustic (wax and resin) finish. Sue’s work has been displayed in museum shows and galleries across the United States and in Japan, and is in numerous private collections throughout the country. Her sculpture was featured in the 1998 Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog. In 2002 she received an artist residency at Penland School of Crafts. She currently maintains a studio and residence on Guemes Island, WA.
Sue received a 2012 GAP to help purchase an new kiln. Sue has worked in clay for over 25 years building figurative ceramic sculptures and functional ceramics. In the last few years she has been creating life-size portrait busts in clay and is working towards working on an even larger scale. She has been invited to create and installation of ceramic figures at a Camano Island Gallery in 2013. Since her 22-year-old kiln recently broke-down, she is now able to accept the invitation and create new work.
